Ontario Association of Police Service Boards Responds to Inspectorate of Policing Report

London, ON – May 26, 2025 – The Ontario Association of Police Service Boards (OAPSB) acknowledges the release of the Inspectorate of Policing’s latest report on Public Order Units and the state of policing in Ontario. This comprehensive review highlights key findings, promising practices, and recommendations aimed at strengthening policing governance and operations across the province.

The OAPSB recognizes the importance of ensuring that police services are equipped with the necessary policies, agreements, procedures, training, and equipment to effectively maintain public order while respecting democratic freedoms. Further, we acknowledge the Inspectorate of Policing’s findings, which affirm that existing public order policing systems are fundamentally sound, while offering valuable recommendations to ensure system sustainability and effectiveness in the future.

“We welcome the Inspectorate’s findings and recommendations, which align with our ongoing commitment to fostering effective police governance and accountability,” said Lisa Darling, Executive Director. “Public order maintenance is a critical aspect of policing, and we support efforts to enhance policies and practices that ensure safety while upholding fundamental rights.”

These recommendations introduce a forward-thinking approach, positioning public order maintenance as an integral part of regular policing.  By modernizing training, deployment strategies, and operational frameworks, the proposed measures align policing with contemporary demands and reinforce its role in everyday community safety.

“Strong governance, informed decision-making, and strategic implementation of these recommendations will undoubtedly guide policing in Ontario toward continued improvement and public confidence” Patrick Weaver, Chair.
