Police Governance in Ontario is not what it used to be. The Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA) has changed the game and governance boards across the province are now expected to step up in ways they never have before.

Some are starting from scratch. Others are trying to shake off decades of legacy habits. Either way, the message is clear. Oversight is no longer optional. It is the job.

This new series is built for boards that need clarity, direction and a push toward real accountability as well as the immediate circle of those who support boards in the Sector. Municipalities, community partners, Police Services and the public. We are calling it Board Basics. It is not about theory. It is about action.

Each post will break down what boards are actually responsible for and how they can start doing the work properly.

We are kicking things off with the most important question of all. What does a police board actually do. If your board or partners cannot answer that in plain language, it is time to start here.
