Post 2: : The Budget Blind Spot

Police boards are responsible for overseeing multi-million dollar policing budgets. But too often, they have no budget of their own.

Boards are expected to meet complex legislative obligations under the #CSPA, including strategic planning, performance monitoring, and community engagement. Yet many lack the resources to train their members or access governance tools.

This disconnect creates risk. Without proper development, boards may struggle to challenge operational budgets, ask critical questions, or ensure transparency.

As budget season begins, boards must advocate for modest, targeted funding to support their own capacity. This is not about excess, it is about enabling boards to do the job they are legally required to do.
